Overview

Miles Off is a geography game that runs primarily in your browser. We collect minimal data and are committed to being transparent about what we store and why. We don't sell your data. We don't build profiles on you. We just want you to find Ulaanbaatar on the first try.

Local Storage

The game stores your preferences and play history in your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device unless you sign in for leaderboard features. Specifically, Miles Off may store the following keys:

  • miles-off:best-iq: your personal best Explorer IQ score from campaign runs
  • miles-off:projection: your globe / flat-map display preference
  • miles-off:daily: your daily challenge record, including the current streak and today's result
  • miles-off:daily-history: a history of your past daily challenge results (premium feature)
  • miles-off:campaign-history: a history of your campaign runs (premium feature)

You can clear all of this data at any time through your browser's site data / localStorage settings.

Accounts and Authentication

Leaderboard features require an account. We use Clerk for authentication. When you sign in, Clerk processes your email address and any social login credentials (Google, Apple, or others you choose). We do not store passwords — Clerk handles all authentication securely using industry-standard practices.

Your display name (as provided to or set through Clerk) appears on the public leaderboard alongside your score. You can update your display name through your account settings.

Leaderboard Data

When you submit a daily challenge score for the leaderboard, we store the following on our servers:

  • Your Clerk user ID
  • Your display name
  • The daily challenge number
  • Your total score
  • Your raw guesses (coordinates and timing for each question)

The server re-computes your score from your raw guesses to prevent manipulation. Your score and display name are publicly visible on the leaderboard. Your raw guesses are not publicly displayed. You can request deletion of your leaderboard data by contacting us at the email listed on our Contact page.

Google AdSense and Third-Party Advertising

This site uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to our site and/or other sites on the Internet.

You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings. We do not control the cookies set by Google AdSense. For more information, see Google's Privacy Policy.

Analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics for cookieless, privacy-friendly pageview counting. This does not use cookies and does not track individual users across sessions or sites. It provides aggregate traffic data only.

Gameplay Telemetry

To learn which places players find hardest, we record gameplay events: the place asked, where the pin landed, the distance, timing, and points. For campaign and practice rounds played while signed out, these events are stored without any account identifier and cannot be tied back to you. Signed-in play (including the Daily Challenge) is stored with your account as described under Leaderboard Data. Aggregate difficulty statistics computed from this data may be shown publicly (for example, a “hardest places” page); individual guesses are never shown.

Payment Data

Premium subscriptions are processed by our payment provider. We do not store or handle credit card numbers or other payment credentials — all payment processing is handled securely by the provider. You will be subject to the payment provider's own privacy policy at checkout.

Your Rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have rights under applicable privacy law, including the right to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you.

  • Local data: Clear your browser's localStorage or site data at any time to remove all locally stored game data.
  • Leaderboard data: Request deletion by emailing hello@miles-off.com. We will process reasonable requests promptly.

Children's Privacy

Miles Off is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the game evolves and features are added. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date at the top. Continued use of Miles Off after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
