About Miles Off
What is Miles Off?
Miles Off is a geography guessing game played on a real, rotatable 3D globe. You're given a place name (a city, a mountain, a river, a desert) and you have ten seconds to click where you think it is. Points scale with how close you are and how fast you answer. The closer and quicker, the higher your score.
It's the kind of game that makes you realise you have a vague mental map of the world and a very specific opinion of where the Aral Sea used to be.
How It Works
The campaign is structured into 12 themed rounds of increasing obscurity, from world capitals and famous landmarks out through straits, ancient ruins and remote outposts. Each round draws 6 places from a deep pool of real locations, so no two runs are the same. You need a minimum score to advance; fall short and the expedition ends.
Two of the rounds are feature rounds: Rivers & Lakes, and Deserts, Seas & Summits. Here, the answer isn't a dot on a map; it's a whole geographic feature. Pin anywhere on the Amazon and it counts as a direct hit, though the biggest targets pay fewer points than the small ones. The globe highlights the full feature when the answer is revealed.
At the end of a run, your total score is converted into an Explorer IQ: a number between 70 and 200, with a rank title to match. Your personal best is saved locally in your browser.
Daily Challenge
Every day there are 5 new places, the same puzzle for everyone that day (seeded by the date), unlocking at your local midnight. One attempt per day. Your results feed a streak, and a shareable grid of marks lets you post your result without spoiling the answers for anyone else. It's the growth loop: come back tomorrow, keep the streak alive.
Leaderboards
Daily and all-time leaderboards let you see how your Explorer IQ stacks up against the rest of the world. Signing in with an account puts your name on the board.
Who Made This?
Miles Off was built by a solo developer with a deep love of geography and a fond memory of spending far too long on flash-era map-pinpointing games. This is a modern remake of that spirit, built with Next.js, MapLibre GL, and a real 3D globe courtesy of OpenFreeMap (open-source, keyless, commercial-use-friendly map tiles).
The whole game runs in your browser. No backend needed to play, no accounts required unless you want to appear on a leaderboard.
