The Great Circle Illusion

Here is a puzzle that catches almost everyone. The shortest flight from New York to Tokyo does not head west across the Pacific. It goes north, arcing up over Canada and the edge of the Arctic before coming down into Japan. On a flat map that route looks like a bizarre detour. On a globe it is a taut, obvious straight line. The gap between those two pictures is the great-circle illusion, and it quietly warps the way you read the world.

What a great circle is

On a sphere, the shortest path between two points is an arc of the great circle: the circle you get by slicing the planet through both points and its centre. The equator is one. Every line of longitude is one. Any straight-string route pulled tight across a globe traces one. It is the honest shortest distance, and it is the line Miles Off measures every miss along, which is why the reveal arc curves.

Why the flat map lies

A flat map has to tear a sphere open and stretch it, and the usual stretch (Mercator) keeps compass directions straight at the cost of everything else. A great-circle route, drawn on that flattened grid, bows away from the straight ruler-line between two cities, often dramatically. So your eye, trained on flat maps, systematically expects the wrong path:

  • New York to Tokyo arcs up past Alaska, not straight across the Pacific.
  • London to Los Angeles crosses over Greenland and northern Canada.
  • Sydney to Santiago dips far south, skirting Antarctic waters, not straight across.
  • Johannesburg to Perth bends south into the Southern Ocean.

Airlines are not being scenic. They are being spherical. The same physics is why the far north is closer to everywhere than it looks, a point the degree guide makes with the cosine rule.

How it warps your guesses

The illusion does two things at the map table. First, it corrupts your sense of what is "near": because your mental map is flat, you assume two places on the same latitude are neighbours and two places at different latitudes are far apart, when the sphere often says otherwise. Reykjavik feels remote from everywhere; it is actually a short great-circle hop from both New York and Moscow. Second, it makes the reveal arc look like an accusation when it is really a lesson: a curve that swings poleward is not the game being unfair, it is the shortest real distance, and reading it that way rebuilds your intuition one miss at a time.

Recalibrating

The cure is to think on the globe, not the wall map. Spin the sphere so your two points are both facing you and the great circle becomes visibly straight. Trust latitude less as a proxy for closeness, especially up high where the meridians crowd together. And when a place surprises you by being "closer" to somewhere unexpected, that surprise is the illusion lifting. The flat map was the distortion all along, the same way it shrinks Africa and inflates the poles.
