The Islands Quiz

Where the atlas goes sparse: island escapes across every ocean. This pack draws from 63 real places, and the quiz is not multiple choice: you get an unlabelled 3D globe, the name of a place, and 10 seconds to pin where it is. Points scale with how close you land and how fast you commit, so a near miss beats a wild stab and knowing beats guessing.

Latitude is your friend, longitude is your enemy

Islands are the pack where everyone knows the names and almost nobody knows the coordinates. The difficulty is not recognition, it is placement: a tropical island could sit in the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific or the Coral Sea, and they all look alike. The saving grace is that latitude sorts most of them. Tropical islands cluster near the equator, so a "tropical" clue pins you into a band, and the only question left is which ocean. Atlantic outliers, Iceland and the Faroes, Bermuda and the Azores, sit at higher latitudes where the globe is sparser, and they reward the player who recognises the cold-water cluster.

The single most common error is treating the tropics as one place. Bali and Aruba are both tropical, but they are on opposite sides of the world. So the skill this pack builds is ocean recognition: not "where is the island" but "which sea is it in".

Four ocean basins that organise the pack

The Caribbean. Jamaica, the Bahamas, Barbados, Aruba, Curaçao, Saint Lucia, Martinique and Antigua all sit in the Caribbean basin between Florida and South America. They share a latitude band around 15 to 25 degrees north, so once you know the clue is Caribbean, the pin goes in that sea and the longitude is settled.

The Indian Ocean. The Maldives, the Seychelles, Mauritius, Réunion, Zanzibar, the Comoros and Madagascar all sit in the western Indian Ocean off the African coast. Madagascar is the giant of the group, the fourth largest island in the world, and it anchors the whole basin: if a clue is Indian Ocean and the island is large, aim off the southeast coast of Africa.

The Pacific arcs. Indonesia, the Philippines, Fiji, French Polynesia, Palau and the Cook Islands scatter across the largest ocean, but they cluster into arcs. Indonesia and the Philippines sit in the west, near Asia; Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia sit in the southwest; Tahiti, Bora Bora and Rarotonga sit in the east, in Polynesia. The longitude span is enormous, so a "Pacific island" clue still needs a region, but the latitude is usually tropical.

The North Atlantic outliers. Iceland, the Faroes, the Azores, Bermuda, Madeira and the Canaries form a mid-Atlantic cluster between roughly 28 and 65 degrees north. They are the islands that look like they belong to Europe but sit out in the ocean, and they are easy to confuse with each other. Iceland is the northernmost, the Canaries the southernmost, and the Azores sit roughly between them.

What makes an island run hard

The pack punishes the player who knows the brochure but not the atlas. Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Corfu and Rhodes are all Greek, but they spread across the Aegean and Ionian seas over hundreds of kilometres, so a confident "Greece" pin is a real miss if you pick the wrong island group. The Mediterranean islands generally, Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica, Cyprus, Malta, sit between 35 and 43 degrees north and reward knowing which sea corner they occupy. And the remote Pacific states, Nauru, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, are where even good players run out of map, because nothing nearby helps you triangulate.
